Environmental Scout Centre Kočevski rog

Location and Access
Location and Access

How to find us?

Well, we are literally in the middle of a forest :)

The Environmental Scout Centre is located in the untouched wilderness of the vast Rož forests, on the site where the Rog sawmill once operated.

A short distance away you can find the Rajhenavski Rog primeval forest and the highest point of the Rož massif, Veliki Rog at 1099 metres above sea level with a viewing tower. The area offers many other natural highlights such as the spruce Jelka, known as the Queen of Rog, the tallest spruce in Slovenia, the Prelesnik sinkhole, and the Ice Cave near Kunec.

Coordinates of the Environmental Scout Centre: 45.676034, 15.005093

ACCESS

You can reach the centre on foot, by bike, car, or bus from the town of Kočevje or from the village of Podturn near Dolenjske Toplice. The road is gravel, well maintained, and cleared during winter, which makes access possible throughout the year.

Directions from Ljubljana:

The quickest route from Ljubljana follows the motorway towards the Dolenjska region to the Bič exit (30 km). At the exit turn left toward Žužemberk (13 km). In Žužemberk turn left toward Dvor or Novo mesto and follow the Krka river valley to the village of Soteska (10 km). At the beginning of Soteska turn right across the bridge and continue to the village of Podturn (4.5 km). At the entrance to Podturn turn right at the sign for "Baza 20" and follow the signs for Rog, which lead directly to the Environmental Scout Centre (13.5 km). The trip from Ljubljana takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes.

You can also reach the centre from Kočevje through the villages of Šalka vas and Željne. In this case follow the signs "Baza 20". The distance from Kočevje to the Environmental Scout Centre is 18.5 km.
